Welcome to ChIMP Champs - Child-initiated Muscal Play Champions

While recognising adult-led music has its place, ChIMP Champs celebrates child-led musical activity

Allow music to happen in a playful way, initiated by children.

This benefits children who are “quieter”, giving them the opportunity to express themselves through music in a playful environment of peers.

Let the child start the song. They will sing at the right pitch.

Let the child initiate the movement. It will be at the right speed.

When the child leads the activity, you know you are following the child’s interests and fascinations.

Pay attention to the sounds, create the right environment and facilitate the play, contributing to it as necessary or when invited.

You will make amazing musical discoveries and can build on them

These are common beliefs and worries about early years music

What you can try:

Respond positively to the child’s instrumental play or their vocalisations.

Engage the child in musical conversations but only if the child shows you that this is welcome.

“Music is a specialist activity performed by a musician to an audience”

“Adults must lead all music activities”

“Children’s musical free play is just noise”
